As with most show lamb flocks the Southdowns were started in 1979 as a 4-H project for Mike when he purchased 2 ewe lambs from the Herb McCormick family in Indiana. That fall another 12 ewes were purchased from Mr. McCormick and as they say…the rest is history. The ewe base was grown to around 50 head, but in 1986 a tragic barn fire destroyed everything. It was back to square one with the purchase of 12 ewes from the Mark and Dale Smith flock in Indiana. Over the years, the Southdowns were maintained but not shown much once Mike finished his 4-H career. Today, our flock consists of 25 brood ewes; ½ of which were recently purchased from the Aaron Jennings flock in Texas. Those ewes are rich in CJ Robinson genetics and we are excited about where this set of young females will take us. 2015 will be John David’s 3rd year showing Southdowns and if Cooper has his way it will be his first. We can’t begin to thank all the people that have helped our family these past few years; whether it was hauling our show flock, offering to help in the show ring, sharing genetics or simply extending their friendship. We are located less than 10 minutes from Reproductive Specialty Group so anytime you are in the area to visit with Tad, give us a call. We’d love to show you our Southdowns.
